Description

A urinary infection is an infection of the efferent urinary tract which is mostly caused by bacteria (esp. E. coli bacteria).

Symptoms for infections of the efferent urinary tract: burning in urinating, strong urge to urinate, turbid colour and/or strong odor. If the bladder is also affected, this is called cystitis, which is a mild but unpleasant bladder infection. Infections of the upper urinary tract may lead to similar symptoms and additionally lower back pain, fever and chills.

The detection of protein, white blood cells (leucocytes) and nitrite in the urine provides information of the presence of an infection.

Why is this test important?

A urinary infection is an inflammation of the urinary tract and is generally caused by bacteria. Men, women and children can contract urinary tract infections. It is more common for women and it can occur in older men when an enlarged prostate gland obstructs the urine flow.

How is the test performed?

For performing the test, the (first morning) urine has to be collected in a small container. The test strip has to be immersed in the urine sample. The result can be read out after 60 seconds.

Why is early diagnosis important?

The early stages of infections can be an asymptomatic, depending on whether the infection is in the upper (urethras, kidneys) or lower (urethra, bladder) urinary tract. Early diagnosis prevents the proliferation of bacteria and the development of pyelitis (inflammation of the renal pelvis), which causes severe pain and fever.
